First look at Grav CMS

Apr 18, 2017

To be honest, i never have exposure to other cms, We are mainly wordpress and drupal developers, recently I worked with October Cms to build my personal website, and i quite liked the system. Also liked the system how you can change thinks around very easily. Recently, I came across a client, who want a website with a cms, but dont want it to be complicated with db and so on. It will be an information website, where the datas will hardly change. He wants a system which is simple easy to follow his needs. That point I started beyond the popular and traditional cms like Wordpress and Drupal. To be honest I am clearly out of my comfort zone, info the world of unknown, dont know what the selected CMS have in store and what will be the learning curve. I came across GRAV CMS.

Grav cms is a flat file database which means that there is no database, all data and config option is stored in flat files in the form of yaml and md format. the template engine is Twig, which i already know from october. So i started playing around with Grav.

The following are my observation for the first look on the cms:

Advantages:

  1. Flat file system so no need of complicated database installation.Saves time.
  2. Installation is way easier, just unzip the files and upload it and its ready to go.
  3. Comes with its own sleek Admin Panel but it is optional.
  4. All the themes and the add on are free (for time being)
  5. Fit for websites, which are close to static or not much happening as wordpress or drupal is more sophisticated and cumbersome to them.
  6. Well supported by RocketTheme.
  7. It has an existence of 3 years (as of 2017) already getting enough visits from developers.
  8. Very fast as there is no db.

Disadvantages:

  1. Not fit for highly dynamic websites where a lot of things are happening.
  2. not fit for things like different labels of admin, user system etc.
  3. Not fit for doing complicated shopping carts though they have a shopping cart modules but those are for simple shopping options.

Overall Review:

Overall thought on the first look at this Grav Cms is impressive, fit for small website. Sometimes I hate to say the client that wordpress is a good fit for their work, which i know is not right, as their website is a very basic website but they want the ability to change the content themselves i think grav fits that market.Again this is the first look at the cms, once i started working more on this CMS, I can come up with more comprehensive evaluation. Hopefully I will post another article regarding Grav Cms.
